Themes, New Events Highlight Fifth Annual Success By 6 Week
As it gets set to mark its fifth anniversary, United Way Success By 6 Week has grown from a small series of events into a region-wide celebration of the importance of early childhood learning and care, with an emphasis on “making KFL&A child-friendly”.
The City of Kingston and the counties of Frontenac and Lennox & Addington have officially proclaimed Monday, May 9 through Sunday, May 15 as Success By 6 Week, 2011.
Success By 6 is a United Way initiative that ensures children aged 0-6 years in KFL&A have the supports and resources they need to get a healthy start in life. Success By 6 Week encourages and provides opportunities for families, caregivers, friends and neighbours to “take the time, make the moments matter” with the young children in their lives.
This year, Success By 6 Week features a record 68 no-cost or low-cost events taking place at venues throughout Kingston and its neighbouring counties, all with our youngest residents in mind.
“The number of available activities this year is a testament to the commitment of our community to ensuring that our youngest citizens have the opportunities they deserve to learn, develop and grow,” says Kingston Police Chief and Success By 6 Council of Partners Co-Chair, Stephen Tanner.
This year’s Success By 6 Week will include such returning favourites as celebrity story readings at Indigo Books, a free a child-friendly movie and popcorn at Boulevard Cinema, Napanee, free parent and tot swims, as well as several drop-in playgroups at early years programs throughout Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
Several businesses and organizations in the region have come on board with exciting new or expanded events this year. A sample of some of the activities to look forward to include, Touch the Trucks in L&A County, where kids will get an up-close look and tour of a variety of vehicles, A Minute to Win it! fun and interactive activities presented by The Child Centre in Sharbot Lake, Hanging Basket-Making at Canadian Tire Cataraqui Garden Centre, All About Trains at Pump House Steam Museum, Energy House at St. Lawrence College, and Funny Bone Friday at the Museum of Health Care in Kingston.
