United Way wants to follow up one record year with another
The Kingston-area United Way wants to follow-up one record year with another. The umbrella organization has set a record goal of $3.35 million dollars for this year’s fundraising campaign. Newswatch’s Erin Howe reports from the campaign’s annual kick-off breakfast.
Addressing a crowd of about 600 people, Johnny Mariona explains the important role a Uniyed Way member agency has played in his life.
“Pathways to Education has opened a lot of opportunities for me. . . ”
The grade ten student credits the stay in school program with helping him succeed.
“I know I can do it now, I know I don’t feel any trouble because I just go straight to Pathways for the help, and it’s great.”
It’s just one of the 48 agencies and more than 80 programs funded by the United Way – which has kicked off it’s annual fall fundraising campaign.
“The campaign goal announced today is 150-thousand dollars higher than last year’s target. And as that amount increases, so does the need.”
“The need is always there, will continue to be there, our job over the next 12 weeks is to raise the money that’s required to support these programs in 2013.”
“There are a lot of people counting on us, we’re changing lives, saving lives every day, our agencies work really hard 365 days a year.”
Bhavana Varma says the work of the United Way helps kids reach their potential, builds healthier communities and raises people from poverty to possibility.
“There are 85-thousand stories out there, and it’s really important that we share the value because the logo by itself doesn’t quite tell everyone the need.”
As the United Way strives to continue to help others, Mariona hopes the umbrella organization will reach its goals. As it helps the tenth grader to reach his.
