Public invited to learn about action plan on Poverty Reduction

KINGSTON, ONT./May 23, 2013 – Residents are encouraged to join the City, United Way, and Kingston Community Health Centres for a presentation of the action plan and to find out how you can get involved to help reduce poverty in our community. The presentation will be held on Monday, June 3, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour (53 Yonge St.).

In partnership, the three agencies have worked closely with community stakeholders over the past year to develop an action plan for poverty reduction in Kingston. This coordinated strategy aims to reduce poverty by focusing on five areas: community supports for education; health; housing; skills development and employment; and social services and community supports. Other initiatives will aim to increase public awareness of poverty, revitalize neighbourhoods, eliminate homelessness and increase housing supports, improve access to services, and highlight inequality.

“We are pleased to share the report on the Poverty Reduction Initiative in Kingston and the surrounding area with the public and our stakeholders,” says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO of the United Way serving Kingston Frontenac Lennox & Addington. “This report is the result of community conversations and work over the past two years and we are excited to take everything we have learned and put it into action to improve our community.”
