Local High School Students encouraged to volunteer during six week period
The United Way Volunteer Centre is challenging high school students throughout the region to volunteer for at least three hours over six weeks to “Change the World” as part of the Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge.
High school students can take up the challenge by committing to a volunteer activity between April 6 and May 19 and logging the hours they’ve volunteered. This year, the Volunteer Centre is targeting a goal of 1,500 youth volunteering for a total of 4,500 hours in KFLA.
KFLA students participated in the challenge for the second time in 2013 and exceeded local targets by a wide margin with 1,813 youth volunteering for 8,182 hours, a significant increase over 2012 when 834 youth volunteered for 2,498 hours. The 2013 Ontario results were equally impressive, with 38,000 high school students volunteering over 170,000 hours in their communities.
“Over the years, young people in KFLA have shown that they are committed to making an impact in the community,” says United Way President and CEO Bhavana Varma. “This challenge has proven to be a wonderful way to introduce more high school students to the benefits of volunteering.”
Students are asked to volunteer a minimum of three hours over the six week period to be included in the Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. All hours will count toward high school community involvement activity credits.
Students who are already engaged in volunteer activities can take part in the challenge by tracking their hours during the six week period and submitting them to their Student Services Department. Students who would like to participate but aren’t affiliated with a volunteer activity can visit their Student Services Department for information on events in their school or contact the United Way Volunteer Centre to learn about available volunteer opportunities.
This initiative is made possible with funding support from the government of Ontario.
