FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Community donor steps up to support sleeping cabin project
Donation will be facilitated by United Way KFL&A and used by City of Kingston to help individuals experiencing homelessness in Kingston
Kingston, ON (Jan 27, 2022) – United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is excited to announce a generous donation from a donor who made this donation in honour of her husband, William Shine.
In November 2021, the City of Kingston approved funding for a partnership with Our Livable Solutions to create a sleeping cabin pilot initiative that will operate a maximum of ten (10) sleeping cabins from December 2021 until April 30, 2022 and that will be located at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Upon hearing about the project, the donor reached out as they wanted to help.
“I was concerned seeing the number of people on the streets downtown and wanted to help in some way,” explained Judith Gould. “I am so happy to be in the position to make a difference to people who really need it and help with the cost of these cabins. I am supporting this project in honour of my husband.”
The $100,000 donation will be used to help with the hard costs of six cabins themselves. Currently, all 10 of the sleeping cabins that were delivered to Portsmouth Olympic Harbour are occupied, these sleeping cabins can be re-used after the pilot project
“The pandemic continues to impact the marginalized the most. United Way continues to work with agencies and partners to meet immediate critical needs,” added Bhavana Varma, President and CEO, United Way KFL&A. “We are grateful that this generous donation has been made to help members of our community who are in vulnerable situations. We hope this will inspire people to think of and support our residents who are homeless.”

United Way of KFL&A would like to acknowledge this traditional territory’s longer existence and its significance for the Indigenous people who lived and continue to live on Turtle Island.
We are situated on traditional Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat land. There are Métis and other non-status First People from many Indigenous Nations present in our community today. This acknowledgement symbolizes the United Way KFL&A’s first step, of many, along this path toward Indigenous reconciliation, in a respectful manner.
