2018 Kingston Point-in-Time Count Results

Kingston, ON Communities can better impact issues as complex as homelessness if they have accurate metrics to measure their effectiveness. In 2013, the City of Kingston coordinated Kingston’s first Point-in-Time (PiT) homeless count, as part of its work to develop a 10-year municipal housing and homelessness plan. The PiT Count established a baseline number of individuals experiencing homelessness in our municipality, at that time.

Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy, Kingston was one of 32 communities across Canada to participate in the first nationally coordinated Point-in-Time (PiT) homeless count, and in 2018 will be one of more than 60 communities to provide a second data point to measure any progress made in reducing homelessness.

United Way of KFL&A is leading the PiT Count, locally, in partnership with the City of Kingston. A PiT Count is a census of people who are homeless at the time of the Count and includes asking individuals who are encountered to complete a brief, anonymous survey.

“Having both 2016 and 2018 data will give us a much clearer picture as to the progress the community’s efforts are making and indicate how best to continue to align resources in order to achieve the long-term goal of ending homelessness here in Kingston” says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO, United Way KFL&A.

The PiT Count will be conducted by volunteers who will receive training in the process that will include being assigned a pre-mapped area to conduct a survey of individuals who are outdoors and encountering homelessness.

Interested volunteers are required to be 18 years or older, and available from 5 pm to midnight on the evening of the count.

Volunteer registration and a mandatory training session will be held on April 11th at Regiopolis Notre Dame Secondary School (Russell Street entrance – off of Division Street), from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.
